It is easy to forget ,some 110 years after the above document was produced how much time and effort would have gone into the preparation of a specification such as the above. Imagine producing the above without a calculator or a computerised spread sheet or a typewriter or a word processing facility linked to a printer.

When it came to building itself, just image the effort involved in delivering the materials to site. No lorry or fork lift truck. No mechanical hoists. At best a steam traction engine might have been available for the really heavy transport work. Most likely it was done by horse and cart.
