There are many footpaths in this area but the main path, now farm
tracks, (designated CH30/6, CH30/5 and then CH30/6 again) probably was
originally a short-cut for Cricket St Thomas estate workers to reach the
ridge road above Midnell Farm. The original path simply contoured the
valley re-entrants making the near-300 foot climb to the road less
arduous.
Path CH30/7 is a short-cut that misses
out a huge bend in the road, although the official path turns NNE at a
field boundary, the original path continues in a straight line back to
the Purtington road.
