Group 8 - Around Purtington

The Rose Lane section of path CH30/4 is a simple short cut. The major section, climbing directly up the hillside where it joins path CH30/19 at the turn in Green Lane was, in ancient times, part of the direct route between Purtington and Wayford. In former times this path would have continued in a straight line (following the present field boundary between the two roads, along which the path no longer exists) to Staker's Cross, at the top of Staker's Cross Hill, where it joined the road to Wayford.

Much of path CH30/19 mirrors the route of path CH30/6 further down the valley (although for a different purpose), but where the latter climbs a re-entrant valley via Lue Farm and Midnell Farm, CH30/19 climbs a spur to reach the ridge road. This section was probably a simple short-cut for workers from the Cricket St Thomas estate to reach the main Purtington - Wayford route described above. The climb from Purtington to the ridge road is 127ft / 38.7m.
