The Millennium Book -Web Edition
Intoduction
Two copies of the original Millennium Book exist. One is kept in the County
Archive at Taunton. The other is kept in the village, and can be viewed by request.
The main purpose of the Millennium Book is to provide future generations with a 'snap-shot' of life in the Parish as it existed in the year 2000.Many people were involved in its preparation, probably well over a hundred, led by a small team who
were responsible for its the actual production . Hundreds of hours were spent in its
preparation, and this alone is an indication of the spirit and vitality
of our community
Each copy weighs over two kilograms, and runs to over a hundred size A3 pages. There is an additional volume devoted to photographs of
most of the houses in the Parish, but these have not been included in the Museum Web site due to concerns over security.
Winsham Web Museum is grateful to the Millennium Book Committee for the opportunity to adapt the Millennium Book for inclusion in the Web Museum. In doing so it has remained
faithful to its content, but has not tried to produce a facsimile of the
work. Our main concern has been to achieve access to its content for many more
people than is practicable for a book of which only two copies exist, and present it in a manner that is easily read.
The very nature of a web site necessitates a difference of approach from
the original book form. It is, for example, essential to include menus to facilitate navigation around the virtual gallery in which it is
contained. The various contributions, of which there are over a hundred, all have a unique appearance in the original volumes. In the adaptation you
will see here, each page follows a standard format, and a standard approach to the way in that each contribution is
displayed. The original Millennium Books are a delight in themselves,
and the web-version
cannot be, and does not try to be a substitute for the real thing. The
actual text remains unchanged.
Use is made of many photographs, and in a limited number of situations, text pages have had to be exhibited as image files. For many who, at the time of
reading this, do not have Broadband it will mean some delay while the files load. For this we apologise. In the preparation of the adaptation, we have constantly had to make
judgments relating to the visual quality of an image relative to the speed at which it loads onto your screen.
Please be patient. We are sure the final images will be worth waiting for.

The Press. These
sections are reached through the 'Next' button at the foot of this page.
This
will take you to sub-menu. When you see the item that interests you, click
on it ,and you will immediately go to the item , or to a sub-menu. Then
click on the item in the sub menu.
The Millennium Book contains links to
appropriate sections of the Winsham Web Museum. Where a link exists the
type appears in a lighter shade of Blue. Left
click on the text to go to the item. If a return link does not exist
adjacent to the item at which you arrived, you can return to the
Millennium Book via the Web Museum's Main Menu.
